Prison sisters get gifts, sewing hope with ZANU PF league

The ZANU PF Women’s League, led by Senator Mabel Chinomona, just showed up at Chikurubi Female Prison with stuff for the inmates. They gave clothes and toiletries to over 400 prisoners. Their crew included other party officials like Monica Mutsvangwa and Barbara Mwale. They brought basic items like soap and toothpaste, valued in the thousands of US dollars. They also left behind five sewing machines.

During the visit, Chinomona called the inmates sisters and mothers. She said the gesture was about compassion and sticking to President Mnangagwa’s vibe of including everyone. She told them their current situation isn’t permanent and pushed them to join skills programs for when they get out. Another official, Mutsvangwa, commented that a lot of the women being locked up over crimes of passion, telling couples to just go see a counselor instead.

An inmate named Thandiwe Dube spoke for the group, asking for forgiveness and another shot at life. They gave the visiting politicians some bags they made themselves. The whole thing wrapped up with lunch and a visit to a sick inmate in the clinic, where they said some prayers.
