Protesters in Bhanga damage buildings over a seat change

Violence erupted Monday afternoon when hundreds of demonstrators attacked government facilities across Bhanga Upazila in Faridpur district. The protesters targeted the local police station, Upazila Parishad building, highway police outpost, and municipality offices with sticks and dangerous weapons. Flames consumed the Election Commission office and several vehicles as the mob continued their destructive campaign. Several law enforcement officers and media personnel sustained injuries during the chaos, which began around 1 pm. Television correspondent Sarwar Hossain was among those hurt while attempting to document the unrest.

The demonstration stemmed from anger over recent constituency boundary modifications announced by the Election Commission. Officials moved Algi and Hamirdi unions from the Faridpur-4 constituency to Faridpur-2 under Nagar Kanda upazila. Deputy Commissioner Qamrul Hasan Molla requested public calm and promised an urgent survey to address concerns. The Election Commission had recently redrawn boundaries for 46 parliamentary seats nationwide before the upcoming national elections. Local leaders had previously declared a three-day blockade starting Saturday to protest the changes.
