Qatar pledges $44m to support Haiti's recovery

Qatar committed $44 million toward Haitian security and humanitarian assistance, with funding divided between direct bilateral support and programs administered through United Nations channels. Transitional Presidential Council President Laurent Saint Cyr confirmed discussions in Doha covered police housing construction, displaced family assistance, healthcare infrastructure, and youth entrepreneurship initiatives following devastation from Hurricane Melissa that left over 1.3 million residents without shelter.

The Gulf state will provide $10 million through government-to-government arrangements while channeling $34 million via UN agencies rather than Haitian authorities. Saint Cyr indicated Qatar awaits formalization of documentation related to the Gang Suppression Force before finalizing specific allocations and operational contributions.

Officials from both nations explored security cooperation prospects during meetings between Saint Cyr and Qatari leadership, with plans for coordination alongside American partners on additional resource mobilization. The Haitian leader emphasized that international support remains essential for achieving stability ahead of elections scheduled before the transitional mandate concludes in February 2026.
