Rahul Gandhi waits as Allahabad court drama heats up over Sikhs

The Allahabad High Court announces its decision Friday afternoon regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's legal challenge. Gandhi contests a Varanasi court ruling concerning statements he made about India's Sikh community during his September 2024 United States trip. The High Court suspended lower court proceedings pending this judgment. Petitioner Nageshwar Mishra accused Gandhi of making inflammatory remarks questioning Sikh safety while wearing turbans and visiting religious sites.

The magistrate court initially rejected the complaint citing jurisdictional issues. However, the Sessions Court overturned this dismissal and ordered fresh proceedings. Gandhi's legal team maintains the statements were misrepresented and lacked seditious intent when viewed within full context. State prosecutors counter that Gandhi's opposition leadership role amplifies his words internationally, making his comments potentially divisive and harmful to communal relations.
