Ramaphosa Gears Up for Face Off with Trump

South African President Ramaphosa says he will meet with US President Trump soon. The leaders agreed to discuss their countries' relationship during a phone call. They also plan to talk about peace efforts for Ukraine. Ramaphosa shared this news on Thursday on the social media platform X. He said both presidents want better relations between their nations.

The meeting date remains unannounced. US-South Africa ties worsened after Trump took office this year. Trump criticized South Africa for taking Israel to court over Gaza actions. He stopped all financial aid to South Africa. He also placed 37 percent tariffs on South African exports before pausing them for 90 days.

South Africa lost funding for HIV programs from these cuts. Trump falsely claimed South Africa steals land from white farmers. He offered to help these farmers move to America. The US expelled South African ambassador Rasool last month for criticizing Trump. Ramaphosa revealed his call with Trump as Ukrainian President Zelenskyy visited South Africa.
