Ramaphosa hails Swiss ties in unity plea

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed Swiss lawmakers on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025, in Bern and praised bilateral cooperation on peace initiatives and economic development. The leader thanked Switzerland for its support of South Africa against apartheid and for returning sacred items from the Nkuna royal family, which had been collected by missionary Henri-Alexandre Junod more than a century ago. Officials signed agreements covering cultural programs and mediation partnerships as the nation prepares to lead the G20 forum.

Switzerland represents South Africa's sixth-largest trade partner with exchanges totaling 159.5 billion rand in 2024. The president met with Karin Keller-Sutter to discuss vocational training and innovation in manufacturing. Business delegations from both countries explored investments in renewable energy and technology sectors. More than 100 Swiss companies operate in South Africa, providing employment for thousands of workers across various industries.
