Rand Water wraps pipe fix, taps back on soon

Rand Water's second planned maintenance phase on its aging pipeline network is scheduled for completion this Sunday evening. The utility's work, which began on Friday, has resulted in low water pressure or outright supply interruptions for residents in various parts of Gauteng, including sections of Johannesburg and Midrand.

The necessary infrastructure upgrades involve replacing valves and servicing pipelines to reduce future leaks and system failures. Full water pressure restoration, particularly for elevated areas, may take up to two weeks as reservoirs gradually refill. Officials advise continued careful water usage and patience during the recovery period following the shutdown.

This project is part of a longer-term strategy to improve the reliability of the regional water supply for a growing population. While the temporary disruptions cause inconvenience, the utility states that the work is essential to prevent more severe and frequent outages from deteriorating infrastructure.
