Rashida Tlaib files resolution naming Gaza genocide

Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib has brought forward legislation in Congress that would formally declare Israeli military operations in Gaza constitute genocide against Palestinians. The measure, backed by 21 Democratic colleagues, demands immediate suspension of arms transfers to Israel and prosecution of American individuals or companies involved in alleged atrocities.

The resolution cites provisions from the Genocide Convention while noting that Washington has supplied Israel with military assistance exceeding $21 billion since hostilities began, alongside approval of additional arms sales agreements valued at more than $30 billion. United Nations figures indicate that Israeli actions have resulted in approximately 69,000 Palestinian deaths, with children accounting for over 20,000 fatalities.

Tlaib emphasized that continued American military support enables ongoing violence despite a recent ceasefire arrangement. The measure also calls for targeted sanctions against Israel and invokes international legal obligations requiring intervention when genocide occurs.
