Red robot run kills 1, injures 17 in Harare crash

A driver who ran a red light in Zimbabwe's capital caused a collision that killed one person and left 17 others wounded at a busy city intersection. The crash happened on Saturday when a Nissan Vanette drove through the traffic signal at Josiah Tongogara Avenue and Leopold Takawira Street, striking a Toyota Regius minibus carrying 15 passengers, according to national police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

One passenger from the minibus died at the scene while emergency responders transported the injured victims to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical care. Authorities moved the deceased to the same facility for autopsy procedures. Investigators determined the Nissan driver disregarded the red signal before hitting the public transport vehicle at the controlled junction.

The accident underscores persistent road safety challenges as officials continue urging drivers to follow traffic regulations and exercise caution. Law enforcement agencies emphasize that adherence to basic rules like obeying signals can prevent tragedies affecting multiple families and communities across the nation.
