Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff dies at 81

Reggae pioneer Jimmy Cliff passed away at 81 following complications from a seizure and pneumonia, according to an announcement from his wife, Latifa Chambers, through social media. The Jamaican vocalist and performer achieved worldwide recognition through chart successes and his starring role in the 1972 crime film The Harder They Come, which became a landmark production in Caribbean cinema.

Born in Saint James in 1944, Cliff launched his recording career after relocating to Kingston and partnering with producer Leslie Kong. His infectious melodies and socially aware compositions earned him millions of admirers across continents, with signature tracks like Wonderful World, Beautiful People reaching mainstream audiences. The artist received the Jamaican Order of Merit and earned two Grammy awards throughout his career.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness honored the musician as a cultural icon whose work elevated Jamaican heritage on the international stage. Cliff remained active until recently, releasing his final studio effort, Refugees with Wyclef Jean, concluding a catalog spanning more than three decades of recorded output.
