Report links Splinter Cell axing to XDefiant push

AdHoc Studio’s new game, Dispatch, has sold over one million copies. The studio was founded by former Telltale developers, including Nick Herman, who confirmed his team initially joined Ubisoft San Francisco after leaving Telltale Games. At Ubisoft, they worked on a new Splinter Cell title.

Herman stated that Ubisoft executives later pressured the team to transform the project into a games-as-a-service model. He recalled attempting to develop a narrative-driven service game but ultimately realizing that their creative goals did not align with the company’s direction. Herman and his colleagues departed in 2018 to establish AdHoc.

The project they left behind at Ubisoft San Francisco eventually became the free-to-play title XDefiant. That studio was subsequently closed. The Splinter Cell franchise is now the focus of a separate remake project at Ubisoft Toronto.
