Reverb size, decay, and diffusion shape different cues

Ableton defines reverb decay as the time required for a tail to fall by 60 dB, while size controls the virtual room. Those controls can make a space feel larger or smaller, but they get there by changing different parts of the reverberant response.

Confusion starts because longer decay, larger size, and heavier diffusion can all make a reverb feel more substantial. Reverb diffusion and echo buildup describe how reflections crowd together, while size and decay deal more directly with timing and persistence. Pull the controls apart, and you can fix a metallic room without automatically making the tail longer.

Decay controls persistence rather than room dimensions​

Decay tells you how long reverberant energy hangs around after the source stops. Many digital reverbs express it as RT60, meaning the time required for the level to fall by 60 dB. Increase decay, and the tail lasts longer, even if the spacing and texture of its reflections remain largely unchanged.

Real rooms encourage the familiar link between big spaces and long reverberation, but a plugin does not have to obey it. You can program a tiny virtual space with an absurdly long decay or a huge space whose tail disappears quickly. The result may sound unnatural, stylized, or exactly right for the track.

This separation matters when a reverb is simply occupying too much time. Shortening decay removes late energy without necessarily changing the initial sense of distance, reflection spacing, or grain. If the entrance still sounds boxy after the tail is shortened, decay was never the main problem.

Size changes spacing and can change the reverb color​

Size often scales some or all of the delay lengths inside an algorithmic reverb. Longer internal delays spread events farther apart, while shorter ones make reflections recur more rapidly. The control can therefore change perceived dimensions even when decay time stays fixed.

Small settings can produce a surprisingly metallic result because short delay networks create more obvious resonances. Ableton explicitly warns that extremely small Size values can sound highly colored and metallic, while Valhalla describes larger settings as increasing resonance density and slowing the reverb attack. Bigger is not merely longer.

The architecture behind this behavior reaches back to early artificial reverberation design, where delay structures were used to create convincing reverberant fields electronically. Modern plugins can scale those structures in very different ways, which is why one Size control may mostly affect early spacing while another changes the whole tail.

Size can also alter diffusion indirectly. Stretching the internal delays and the reflections may take longer to accumulate, making the beginning of the reverb sound grainier even though the diffusion knob never moved. Reduce Size and those same events can bunch together sooner, although very short delays may bring unwanted coloration with them.

Diffusion changes texture inside the decay​

Diffusion deals with how quickly separate reflections become a crowded field rather than how long the field survives. Low diffusion can leave audible gaps, chatter, or grain. Higher diffusion usually blends those events into a smoother mass while decay continues to determine how long that mass remains audible.

A long decay with low diffusion can therefore sound sparse for several seconds. A short decay with high diffusion can become smooth almost immediately and then vanish. Neither combination is contradictory because duration and reflection texture are different properties.

Try diagnosing the sound by changing one control at a time. If the tail is simply overstaying its welcome, move decay first. If the virtual room feels cramped, resonant, or strangely metallic even at a sensible decay, test Size before reaching for EQ.

Move diffusion when the length and apparent dimensions already feel right, but the internal texture does not. Chattery reflections, a coarse tail, or a reverb that never quite turns into a continuous field point toward diffusion or a related density control. Keep wet level unchanged while testing so louder does not masquerade as larger or smoother.

Some reverbs deliberately couple these parameters. TC Electronic has documented algorithms where diffusion is automatically adjusted as decay changes, while Reverb Size alters spread and correlation without changing decay time. Lexicon's 480L takes a different route in Reverb mode, where Size acts as a master for Reverb Time and Spread, so moving Size can change the actual tail length as well as the buildup.

When two controls seem to produce the same result, exaggerate the settings and listen at different moments. Decay reveals itself near the end, Size often changes spacing, attack, or coloration, and diffusion shows up in how quickly individual reflections lose their identity. Those time positions are more reliable than the knob names.
