Rooppur nuclear plant to start trial operations in December

Bangladesh will start testing its Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in December after receiving fuel shipments from Russia. Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said Russia declined the government's request for a November launch during remarks to reporters at his ministry headquarters on Tuesday. The International Atomic Energy Agency completed inspections in August and issued safety recommendations that officials are implementing before commercial operations begin.

Russia extended its loan disbursement deadline to 2027 while pushing back repayment obligations to September 2028. The twin-unit facility on the Padma River in Pabna will generate 2,400 megawatts when both reactors operate at full capacity. Moscow finances 90 percent of the $12.65 billion project through state credit, with Bangladesh covering the remaining costs.
