Russia Recognizes Taliban's Rule, Sparking Global Outrage

Russia just made history as the first nation to officially recognize the Taliban government that controls Afghanistan. The militant group grabbed power back during 2021 after kicking out the previous administration backed by foreign countries. Taliban leaders have been desperately seeking approval from other nations and wanting investment money to help rebuild their war-torn country. Afghanistan suffered through four decades of brutal conflict that left the nation devastated and poor.

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan While met with Russian Ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov during Thursday talks held at Kabul. The Taliban official called Russia's move a brave decision that other countries should follow as an example. Russia's foreign ministry said they believe official recognition will boost business cooperation between both nations across multiple sectors. Moscow wants to work with Afghanistan on energy projects, transportation deals, farming ventures and building infrastructure.

Putin's government recently took several steps to normalize relations with the Taliban authorities running Afghanistan. Russian officials removed the Taliban from their terrorist organization list back during April and accepted a Taliban ambassador. Putin even called the Taliban his allies against terrorism during July 2024. Russia opened the first business office after the Taliban takeover and plans to use Afghanistan as a transit route for gas shipments.

Women's rights activists slammed Russia's recognition decision immediately. Former Afghan parliament member Mariam Solaimankhil said the move legitimizes a regime that bans girls from school and enforces public beatings. She argued that strategic interests always trump human rights concerns and international law requirements.
