Ruto and Museveni tackle Migingo dispute, SGR extension

President William Ruto welcomed Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni during a one-day state visit to Nairobi on Wednesday. The two East African heads of state conducted discussions at State House regarding regional security matters and economic partnerships. Eight memoranda of understanding received signatures from both nations to advance bilateral cooperation. The agreements focus on development initiatives and stronger people-to-people connections between the neighboring countries. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to addressing shared challenges and promoting regional stability.

Railway infrastructure dominated portions of their talks, particularly the Standard Gauge Railway extension from Naivasha through Malaba into Uganda. Road development projects also featured prominently, with plans for the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit highway expansion. Cross-border disputes received attention, with a specific focus on resolving fishing conflicts at Migingo Island. The visit represents broader East African Community integration efforts where Kenya and Uganda maintain significant influence. Regional observers interpret these discussions as strategic moves toward enhanced cooperation within the EAC framework.
