President William Ruto has urged lawmakers to fast-track approval of a 1.5 trillion shilling National Infrastructure Fund, describing it as the sole viable mechanism for rehabilitating and extending the nation's deteriorating road system. Speaking at AIC Loglogo in Marsabit County, Ruto stated that conventional budget allocations cannot meet infrastructure requirements and that legislative delays are hindering the construction of highways, rural routes, and economic corridors. The president assured parliamentarians he has identified funding sources and will address the matter during his upcoming State of the Nation presentation to both legislative chambers.
The proposed fund will draw capital from government appropriations, asset sales, capital markets, and public-private partnerships to finance construction projects managed by highway, rural road, and urban road authorities. Ruto emphasized that improved transportation networks are essential for connecting agricultural producers to commercial centers and stimulating rural economic activity, particularly in areas where inadequate roads prevent farmers from moving crops to markets.
