Rwanda Set to Cash In on Congo Minerals

The United States wants Congo to sign a deal letting Rwanda process minerals from eastern Congo legally. This plan aims to stop the fighting between the Congo forces and the Rwanda-backed rebels, M23. The peace talks cover valuable minerals like tungsten, tantalum, and tin that Congo says Rwanda steals. American officials hope both countries will sign an agreement this summer. They believe making the mineral trade legal might reduce smuggling and violence.

Congo officials want Rwanda soldiers and M23 fighters to leave their land before any mineral deals happen. They insist Rwanda must respect its control over resources found inside Congo's borders. For Rwanda, these talks offer a chance to transform illegal mining into a proper business with Western investment. America sees an opportunity to gain access to minerals that China currently dominates. Washington has already sent both countries a draft agreement with proposed terms.
