SADC EAC Joint Meeting on Eastern DRC Crisis

African groups met on Friday to talk about the fighting in eastern Congo. The meeting brought together ministers from southern and eastern African nations in preparation for a bigger meeting of national leaders today.

The talks took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister Amon Murwira led the southern African team, and Kenya's Musaila Mudavadi headed the eastern African side.

Murwira said peace efforts must become stronger to help eastern Congo. "The fighting keeps going despite our work through the Luanda and Nairobi peace talks," he said. "It brings great sadness that 400,000 people had to leave their homes in Goma this year."

Recent months have seen more fighting in eastern Congo. Many people have died. Many more have run from their homes. This has made the area less safe.

Both African groups have tried to bring peace through talks in Luanda and Nairobi. They want the different sides to speak and stop fighting.

The head of the southern African group, Elias Magosi, praised the meeting. He called it important to work together to find lasting answers.

The groups decided to meet after an emergency meeting of southern African leaders in Harare on January 31, 2025. That meeting pointed out the quick changes in Congo's safety problems. The leaders said they needed to act fast.

The bigger meeting today aims to make plans for helping Congo. Leaders want to bring safety, give aid to people in need, and push for long-term peace.

The meeting in Tanzania is met with high hopes. People want African leaders to find effective ways to stop the fighting.

This work between southern and eastern African nations shows that they want to solve their area's problems. It proves that African countries can join hands to make peace.
