SADC Ministers Meet in Harare to Discuss Renewable Energy and Water Infrastructure Investments

Southern African Development Community ministers gathered for their 43rd energy and water conference held at Harare. The regional leaders focused on renewable energy investments and infrastructure development projects. Countries want to achieve complete energy independence across member states. Officials spent five days discussing water and power supply challenges. The meeting began Monday with senior government representatives.

Dr Gloria Magombo from Zimbabwe's Energy Ministry explained regional power system improvements. She described massive investments made across SADC nations to boost electricity supplies. Industries and businesses need more reliable energy sources for growth. The conference identified ways to increase power generation capacity. Ministers explored funding options for major infrastructure projects.

SADC Deputy Executive Secretary Angele Makombo N'tumba shared important statistics about regional electricity. Member states currently produce 85,221 megawatts of total energy capacity. The region faces a shortage of 792 megawatts across all countries. Power shortfalls reach 4,509 megawatts among interconnected Southern African Power Pool nations. Four countries produce excess electricity but cannot share it effectively.

Angola, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania generate surplus power for export. Limited transmission connections prevent these countries from helping neighbors with energy needs. Electrical grid improvements would allow better power sharing between nations. Conference participants discussed building new transmission lines across borders. Better connections would reduce power shortages throughout the region.

Ministers emphasized cooperation on joint water and energy infrastructure projects. They want SADC to become climate-resilient and resource-secure. The conference reinforced commitments to regional development goals. Leaders planned future meetings to monitor progress on energy initiatives.
