SAPS welcomes 3,500 new constables to bolster security efforts

South Africa deployed over 3,500 recently graduated police officers following completion of their nine-month training program at seven academies nationwide. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia addressed the main ceremony at Tshwane, where 2,036 constables received certification, while smaller groups completed their coursework at facilities in Bishop Lavis, Oudtshoorn, Philippi, Mthatha, and Chatsworth.

Officials assigned portions of the graduating class to provide security for the G20 Leaders Summit at Johannesburg's Nasrec Expo Centre, with remaining personnel reinforcing operations during the high-crime festive period. National Commissioner Fannie Masemola emphasized constitutional responsibilities for crime prevention and community collaboration as the recruits transition from trainees to active duty members.

The expansion addresses capacity shortfalls within a force managing approximately 180,000 members amid persistent violent crime statistics and ongoing corruption investigations.
