Sarawak, Abang Johari move to take logging roads

Sarawak will convert all former logging routes linking longhouses and villages into public roads free of charge, according to Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg. A special task force led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who oversees infrastructure and port development, will coordinate the takeover and upgrade these pathways to improve access for rural communities. The initiative addresses longstanding challenges faced by residents who previously needed permission from logging concessionaires to use deteriorating routes.

The conversion effort aims for completion by 2030, transforming old logging tracks into secondary roads connecting to main highways. Abang Johari discussed the approach while launching the Miri-Marudi-Mulu-Long Panai-Long Lama road project in Marudi.

The state is deploying advanced engineering methods for challenging terrain, including elevated roadways suitable for peat soil that preserve existing ground conditions. Highway Information Modeling technology enables computer simulations of designs, assessing wind, rain, and topography before construction begins to ensure long-term structural integrity. Similar techniques have been applied in Limbang and Lawas.
