Saudi Arabia sent a new ambassador to Bangladesh during a fancy ceremony at the presidential palace on Wednesday. Dr Abdullah Zafer H. bin Abiyah handed over his official papers to President Mohammed Shahabuddin while soldiers stood at attention. Top officials from both countries watched as the diplomat officially started his new job. The president told the new ambassador he wants stronger business deals and better treatment for Bangladeshi workers living in Saudi Arabia. Palace guards put on their best show for the important visitor from the oil-rich kingdom.
The fresh-faced envoy promised Saudi Arabia will keep helping Bangladesh grow its economy and build better power plants. He mentioned how his country already helps Rohingya refugees who fled violence in Myanmar. The ambassador wants both nations to work closer together on jobs for migrant workers and making pilgrimages to Mecca easier. Energy projects and trade deals also topped his list of priorities for the future. Saudi money has already helped expand refugee camps and basic services for displaced people.
The new diplomat takes over from Ambassador Essa Yousef Essa Alduhailan who received a special medal from Bangladesh earlier in January. Officials praised his work improving worker rights and managing religious pilgrimages to Saudi holy sites. More than three million Bangladeshis currently work in the desert kingdom and send money back home to their families. Saudi companies keep investing heavily in Bangladeshi roads, bridges and clean energy projects that create thousands of local jobs.
