Second suspect arrested in Westbury shooting case

A 36-year-old man identified as the suspected organizer of a fatal gang attack in Westbury will face a Johannesburg court on Monday. Authorities detained him on Friday after two adolescents died and five others sustained injuries during an Oct. 21 ambush on Croesus Street. Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili confirmed he faces two murder charges and five attempted murder counts.

Officers from the anti-gang division arrested a 20-year-old student on Wednesday while he completed his final secondary school examination at a Soweto campus. His matter was delayed until Thursday for bail proceedings, which prosecutors will contest. Four armed individuals approached seven teenagers smoking hookah on a porch before opening fire without warning. Victims Tigan du Plessis, 18, and Diegan Ryters, 17, perished at the location.

Investigators believe gang rivalries motivated the daytime assault in the western Johannesburg neighborhood. Two additional suspects remain at large as the manhunt continues. Between June and September, the specialized unit apprehended 176 individuals across Gauteng province and confiscated 26 firearms along with substantial quantities.
