Senegal Shocks World by Eyeing Shared Oil With Gambia

Senegal and Gambia could work together on oil and gas.

Senegal's leader said something important last month. He was meeting with Gambia's vice president. The leader said the two countries might share oil and gas under the sea. This had never been said out loud before by someone so important.

Senegal and Gambia are next to each other in Africa. There is a special area called the MSGBC Basin. Experts think this area has a lot of oil and gas. The basin is under the sea in five countries. Two of those countries are Senegal and Gambia.

Senegal already gets oil from the basin, starting in July 2024. But Gambia has not used any oil yet. Some people think the oil field goes into Gambia's waters, too.

In the past, Senegal and Gambia have not always gotten along well. They are different in some ways, even though they are neighbors. But they also share some things, like history and culture.

Leaders in the past had their ideas about working with each other. Some tried to be friends, while others did not trust each other very much. Things were not always fair when they made deals.

Oil and gas companies have sometimes made things harder. They did not always tell the full story about what they found, making some people think that they were hiding things. This made Gambians wonder if they could trust the companies.

Senegal already made a deal with Mauritania about sharing gas. It shows how countries can work together. Maybe Senegal and Gambia can do the same thing. But they need to talk openly and make clear rules.

What Senegal's leader said gives people hope. It shows that maybe the two countries can be better friends. Maybe they can find a way to share oil and gas, which could help them both grow.

But talking is not enough. Senegal and Gambia have to take real steps and make smart plans fast. If they don't, Gambia could lose out.

The oil and gas could be worth a lot of money. It could help Senegal and Gambia fix big problems in their countries. But they have to work together to make it happen. It might not be easy, but it would be good for everyone.
