Police arrested a top crime intelligence officer at Johannesburg airport on Thursday. Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo faces corruption charges according to prosecutors. The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed his arrest but refused to share details before his court appearance. Police Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola said Khumalo called him about the arrest. Sources within the police force linked the charges to corruption activities.
Parliament's police committee chair Ian Cameron expressed shock about the arrest. He said this creates more problems for police leadership after another general was arrested recently. Cameron called for urgent reviews of police management and integrity checks. The Democratic Alliance party welcomed Khumalo's arrest along with three other senior crime intelligence officials. These officers are Brig Daniel Ncube, Brig Nozipho Madondo and Maj-Gen Gabela.
The charges reportedly involve improper hiring practices and stealing money from secret police funds. Crime intelligence allegedly spent millions on questionable property deals. One purchase involved a commercial building worth R22.8 million. Another deal covered a luxury hotel costing R22.7 million. Both transactions received approval from Khumalo and another officer named Maj-Gen Philani Lushaba.
Lushaba was arrested earlier after lying about his stolen police weapon and laptop. A sex worker allegedly took these items from him. The DA expects more arrests of high-ranking police officials. Party leaders blame corruption from the Zuma administration for damaging the crime intelligence division. They want Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to ensure full prosecutions of guilty officers.
