Seoul probe drags marine boss Kim Kye-hwan into Chae drowning scandal

Special counsel investigators questioned retired three-star General Kim Kye-hwan on Sunday regarding his suspected role in disrupting military investigations. The former Marine Corps Commandant faced his fourth interrogation session at the team's southern Seoul office. Kim refused to speak with reporters as he entered the building. Prosecutors suspect he interfered with the military investigation surrounding Corporal Chae Su-geun's drowning death during July 2023 flood rescue operations. The young Marine died while searching for storm victims without proper safety equipment.

Investigators examine claims that former President Yoon Suk Yeol became furious after discovering the original probe held a senior Marine officer responsible for the corporal's death. Kim initially denied informing the lead military investigator about Yoon's reaction during the July 2023 presidential meeting. He later admitted during July 22 court proceedings that he witnessed the president's angry response. The court dismissed the prosecutors' arrest warrant request that same day. Judges determined Kim posed minimal flight or evidence destruction risks.
