Serem claims bronze for Kenya as Beamish stuns El Bakkali in Tokyo steeple

Edmund Serem secured bronze in the men's steeplechase at Tokyo World Championships. The Kenyan athlete recorded 8:34.56 for his first senior global medal. New Zealand's Geordie Beamish delivered a stunning upset by defeating Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali. Beamish won gold in 8:33.88 while El Bakkali claimed silver. Abraham Kibiwott failed to finish the demanding race.

Kenya placed two runners in the men's 1500m final after strong semifinal performances. Reynold Cheruiyot dominated his heat with a winning time of 3:36.64. Timothy Cheruiyot advanced by finishing fourth in 3:35.61. Wiseman Were earned a spot in the 400m hurdles semifinals with 48.27. Faith Cherotich and Doris Lemong'ole progressed to the women's steeplechase final.

Tanzania's Alphonse Simbu achieved a historic victory in the men's marathon. He won his country's first World Championships gold medal in 2:09:48. Kenya's marathon team performed poorly with Kennedy Kimutai placing 16th. Vincent Ng'etich finished 22nd while Hillary Kipkoech withdrew from the race. Germany's Amanal Petros and Italy's Iliass Aouani completed the podium.
