Seven-family wipeout on Masaka road, overtaking costs dearly

A family of seven was wiped out in a horrific highway crash early Saturday. The accident happened on the Masaka-Mbarara road in Lwengo District at Njagalakasayi around 4:30 a.m. Traffic Police spokesperson ACP Michael Kananura said a Toyota Fielder, plate UBH 476W, collided head-on with a Fuso Fighter truck marked UBP 510V. Preliminary reports state the Toyota tried to overtake a line of vehicles from the Masaka direction, slamming into the oncoming truck.

All seven people in the Toyota Fielder died instantly at the scene. Police identified the victims as a man, his wife, their four children, and the man's brother. Their names are being withheld pending family notification. Traffic Police have opened a full investigation into the circumstances.

Authorities issued a strong warning to drivers following the tragedy. Kananura cautioned against reckless overtaking, especially at night. He cited poor visibility and driver fatigue as major risk factors for fatal collisions. Motorists were advised to avoid night travel when possible and to be properly rested before long journeys.
