Seven Silobela miners die in flooded shaft after heavy rains

Zimbabwean authorities urged miners to halt underground operations during wet weather after seven artisanal workers perished in a flooded shaft at Auriga 47 Mine near Silobela on November 5. Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed rescue teams recovered the victims, identified as Qubekhani Mahlube, Osca Bafana, Albert Nhengure, Amos Bafana, Bhilito Bhepe, John Dube, and Mkhululi Moyo, two days after heavy rainfall trapped them below ground. The Civil Protection Unit emphasized that abandoned pits become particularly hazardous when saturated with water.

Similar incidents have claimed numerous lives throughout 2025, including four workers killed in a Shurugwi collapse during September and five trapped at Umsasa Farm in Mazowe the same month. Police and mining officials warned that illegal operations frequently lack proper drainage and structural support systems necessary to withstand seasonal storms. The Meteorological Services Department predicted continued heavy precipitation accompanied by thunderstorms across mining regions.
