Shabana Azmi storms Connecticut with Broken Images, Karnad’s ghost grins

Acclaimed actress Shabana Azmi prepares for her North American theatrical tour featuring the one-woman production Broken Images. The Padma Bhushan honoree and five-time National Award recipient will present the work penned by deceased playwright Girish Karnad under Alyque Padamsee's direction. Performances begin September 25 in Connecticut and progress through Chicago, Bay Area, and Vancouver before continuing to Raleigh, Boston, New York, and Toronto through early October. The production represents a significant achievement in modern Indian theater and marks Azmi's second tour of this particular work across the United States and Canada. Her extensive film collaboration with Karnad spans multiple acclaimed projects.

The narrative centers on Manjula Sharma, a Hindi author whose literary path explores themes of identity and fragmented existence while questioning reality versus perception. Prria Haider Productions and Priyanka Jotwani present the tour, with Haider having coordinated more than one hundred international performances featuring prominent Indian artists. Azmi expresses enthusiasm for reconnecting with established audiences while reaching new theater patrons throughout the tour. The actress anticipates creating memorable experiences and fostering meaningful dialogue through her theatrical presentation. She emphasizes the unique energy North American audiences bring to live performances.
