Sharks lose Am to Japan as fans left reeling

The Sharks issued a tribute to Springbok center Lukhanyo Am after announcing his departure from the Durban club. The two-time Rugby World Cup winner will return to Japan and sign with the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Dynaboars. The franchise posted a message on social media expressing gratitude for his contributions during more than 100 appearances while wearing their colors. Officials praised his leadership qualities and consistent performance both during matches and in the locker room.

This marks Am's second professional stint in Japan. He previously played for the Kobe Steelers during 2022 and scored three times across six matches. Glenn Delaney's Dynaboars recently shared video footage highlighting Am's recent performance during a United Rugby Championship match against the Scarlets. The center currently appears on the Springbok reserve list for the autumn international series after helping South Africa claim consecutive World Cup championships.

Am will join four other South African players already on the Dynaboars squad. Pieter Scholtz, Walt Steenkamp, Friedle Olivier, and Gideon Koegelenberg form the existing contingent from the nation. The move reunites him with familiar territory in Japanese rugby competition.
