Shubman Gill to captain India in ODIs and Tests

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that managing three separate captains across cricket formats proved impractical, prompting Shubman Gill's appointment as ODI captain to replace Rohit Sharma. The selection committee retained Rohit and Virat Kohli in the squad, but consolidated leadership by assigning Gill both Test and ODI responsibilities. Suryakumar Yadav continues leading the T20I team with Gill serving as vice-captain.

Agarkar addressed concerns about potential player fatigue, citing Gill's performance in England as evidence of his capability under pressure. The 26-year-old from Punjab will likely participate across all formats going forward as selectors balance workload management with leadership development. Team management aims to provide adequate preparation time before the ODI World Cup in two years.

The Australia tour begins on Oct. 19 with three ODIs, followed by five T20I matches from Oct. 29 through Nov. 8. The selection panel believes this restructured captaincy approach facilitates better strategic planning for upcoming competitions.
