Silicon Motion Powers 128 TB SSD for AI Data Centers

Silicon Motion Technology Corporation has started sharing samples of its new MonTitan SSD Reference Design Kit, which handles up to 128 TB using QLC NAND. The company created this kit on its advanced PCIe Gen 5 SSD Development Platform. By giving its partners a strong and efficient reference design kit, the company aims to speed up enterprise and data center AI storage solutions.

The kit comes with Silicon Motion's PCIe Dual Ported SM8366 controller designed for business needs. This controller supports PCIe Gen 5 x4 NVMe 2.0 and meets OCP 2.5 data center standards. It delivers excellent performance, quality of service, and massive capacity for storing large amounts of data.

The 128 TB SSD uses the newest 2 TB die QLC NAND with special firmware made for businesses and data centers. This keeps the drive reliable even during heavy use. It reads data at speeds over 14 GB per second and handles 3.3 million random read operations every second. These speeds reduce bottlenecks and maintain smooth operation.

The drive performs 25% better at random reads compared to other Gen 5 high-capacity options. This helps AI systems train large language models faster and finish graph neural networks more quickly. These improvements cut power needs and help AI GPUs work more efficiently.

The reference design kit also supports NVMe 2.0 FDP, which stands for Flexible Data Placement. This feature manages data better and helps the SSD write more efficiently, making it last longer. Silicon Motion added its PerformaShape technology, which uses special algorithms to optimize performance based on user requirements.

FDP and PerformaShape work together to manage data effectively, keep delays short, and maximize overall performance. This works especially well for AI data tasks running simultaneously, including data intake, preparation, training, and making predictions.

Alex Chou from Silicon Motion explained that their reference design kit helps customers quickly develop business-class SSDs for AI data centers and edge servers. By offering this complete platform, which supports 128 TB with QLC NAND, they help partners create storage solutions that meet the growing demands of AI systems.

CC Wu from Innodisk mentioned they enjoyed working with Silicon Motion to make their latest business SSD for AI servers and data centers. The MonTitan development platform gave them the flexibility to design drives with industry-leading performance.

Frank Chen from Exascend pointed out that data storage matters more than ever during this AI boom. Their work with Silicon Motion created a PCIe Gen 5 SSD specifically for AI servers. It provides stable speeds and efficient data management, perfectly meeting the storage needs of AI systems.

Silicon Motion has made this 128 TB SSD reference design kit available to selected partners and customers for testing.
