Sitharaman mourns Karur stampede as Vijay hides

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman traveled to Karur on Monday to meet families affected by the stampede that killed 41 people at actor-politician Vijay's rally on Sept. 27. She visited the disaster location at Velayuthampalayam with Union Ministers L. Murugan and Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran before consoling survivors at Karur Government Medical College Hospital. The crush occurred when crowds surged after Vijay finished speaking at the TVK campaign event.

President Droupadi Murmu mourned the deaths, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorized 2 lakh rupees for each victim's family. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced 10 lakh rupees compensation per household. Retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan leads a judicial probe examining the incident.
