Six independents join DPP, tilt power in Parliament

Political analyst Sheriff Kaisi said the decision by six independent lawmakers to join the ruling Democratic Progressive Party will strengthen the government’s influence and weaken the opposition in parliamentary sessions. The legislators, elected as independents in the Sept. 16 general elections, have declared allegiance to the DPP. They are Josephy Malingamoyo of Ntcheu North East, Fretcher Padoko of Balaka Bwaila, Dyress Mbengo of Ntcheu Dzonzi Vai, Donnex Mpuzeni of Machinga South West, Abigail Bongwe of Zomba Likangala, and Paul Ng’oma.

Kaisi said the development follows a familiar trend in Malawi’s politics, where independent members often join the ruling side after elections. He said such moves, while lawful, raise questions about the sincerity of independent representation. Kaisi added that these defections could erode opposition strength and weaken parliamentary oversight.

He noted that many independents choose to align with the ruling party for political or personal gain rather than ideological reasons. Kaisi said the shift reflects a broader political culture driven by access to power instead of principle. The move is expected to bolster the DPP’s control in the National Assembly and solidify its legislative dominance.
