Sky Drones to Snag Harare Traffic Villains

Police officers will fly drones over Harare's city center to catch traffic lawbreakers. The flying devices will work alongside new electronic camera systems that are already monitoring the streets. Cities across Zimbabwe have become chaotic traffic zones, with illegal minibus taxis causing daily problems. Drivers frequently break rules by engaging in illegal passenger pickups, driving in the wrong lane, and disregarding traffic signals. Many vehicles operate without proper licenses or permits from transport authorities.

Surveillance cameras have already caught 290 drivers breaking various traffic laws during recent operations. Commissioner Paul Nyathi announced that drones will launch from Harare Central Police Station to spot rule breakers. Most of the 290 captured offenders have received identification and fines from police departments. The drone technology can watch activities up to 20 kilometers away from the central command post. Officers can monitor locations from Market Square to Exhibition Park using the remote-controlled aircraft.

The new system will help reduce traffic congestion around the business district and enforce driving laws more effectively. Bulawayo City also uses closed-circuit television cameras to watch downtown traffic violations. Police plan to expand the drone program to other major cities nationwide soon. Drivers who think they can avoid detection will face surprises when aerial surveillance begins operations. The police commissioner aims to modernize law enforcement and enhance traffic enforcement through the use of advanced technology.
