Smart Market set to open in Mbare after major upgrade

The Mbare Musika market has scored a major upgrade, with the new Smart Market facility opening this Friday. President Mnangagwa will attend the launch of this modern trading center, which aims to clean up and secure the marketplace for everyone. Despite rumors flying around social media, stall rentals will cost traders just $120 monthly, keeping it affordable for local sellers.

Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe called the project a game-changer for urban development that helps formalize street trade. Mayor Jacob Mafume highlighted how the facility transforms Zimbabwe's busiest trading hub with better organization and efficiency. The market comes equipped with 120,000 liters of borehole water, waste management systems, security cameras, and guards to keep everyone safe.

Shoppers will find secure parking and helpers to carry purchases, making shopping easier. Small traders can access micro-loans through the market's financial service. The market also features a washing area where vendors can clean produce before selling it. This renovation follows the devastating fire in April 2023 that wrecked large parts of the market and hurt thousands of traders' livelihoods.

South African opposition leader Julius Malema praised Zimbabwe's efforts to modernize informal trading spaces. The Smart Market should become a blueprint for similar projects across Zimbabwe, bringing better organization and safety to street markets nationwide.
