Smash Bros Creator Says Generative AI Can Save Game Development

Masahiro Sakurai creates the Super Smash Bros games for Nintendo. He told ITmedia that making huge video games costs too much money and takes forever. Companies cannot keep spending this way because they will go broke. Sakurai believes artificial intelligence tools can solve these problems. Game studios that learn to use AI will survive and others will fail.

Japan faces a serious shortage of skilled programmers and artists. Not enough people want to make video games there anymore. Companies struggle to find workers who can build complex projects. Hiring people from other countries sounds good but creates new headaches. Most foreign workers cannot speak Japanese well enough to work on teams.

Sakurai thinks AI programs can fill these gaps and help small teams do more work. These computer tools can create art and write code much faster than humans. Studios can finish projects quicker and spend less money doing it. The game industry must change or face complete disaster.

Other Nintendo leaders have talked about AI before. Shigeru Miyamoto makes the Mario games and shared his thoughts last year. He said Nintendo usually does the opposite of what other companies do. The company watches industry trends but makes different choices. Many game workers worry that AI will steal their jobs and hurt creativity.
