Sofia parking price hike may be blocked pending investigation

Bulgarian consumer regulators may prevent Sofia's planned parking fee increases from taking effect as authorities investigate whether doubling rates from two leva to two euros constitutes unjustified price gouging. Consumer Protection Commission chairman Alexander Kolyachev confirmed his agency has demanded economic documentation from municipal officials to determine if cost factors warrant the surge.

Officials expect to receive financial justifications by Monday's conclusion. Should investigators identify violations under the euro conversion legislation, anticipated court challenges could delay implementation beyond the scheduled start. The law mandates that rate hikes stem from uncontrollable expenses such as rising wages, taxes, or delivery charges rather than arbitrary markup decisions.

Kolyachev acknowledged that litigation would trigger administrative procedures, potentially suspending the blue and green zone tariff changes indefinitely. Commission findings will determine whether formal legal action proceeds against the Sofia Municipal Council's approved measures.
