Sofia ring road petition murders traffic jams

Municipal councilor Simeon Stavrev from PP-DB and Ovcha Kupel mayor Angel Stefanov launched a petition campaign to complete six kilometers of the Sofia Ring Road. The officials sent letters to the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, the Agency for Road Infrastructure, and Sofia Municipality requesting budget allocation for the segment between Lazurna and Kievska streets to the Struma highway. Stavrev stated that state institutions cannot abandon critical infrastructure projects, and he noted the Ring Road connects four highways but remains incomplete while the Hemus highway received advance payments worth tens of millions despite lacking parcel plans and construction permits.

The Court of Auditors reported that Automagistrali paid 800 million leva to private companies without clear regulations. Sofia Municipality completed the detailed development plan in May 2024, and officials guaranteed property expropriation for construction. The section experiences above-average highway traffic loads with daily congestion, and the completed road will serve the future National Children's Hospital.
