The Supreme Court will hear a petition on Monday from Gitanjali J. Angmo challenging her husband Sonam Wangchuk's detention. Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria will review the habeas corpus case filed by the climate activist's wife. Angmo stated on Friday that she lacks information about Wangchuk's health or detention grounds one week after his arrest.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs accused Wangchuk of inciting violence in Leh town. Officials detained the activist under the National Safety Act and transferred him to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan after he ended a hunger strike that began on Sept. 10. Four civilians died when security forces opened fire on protesters who allegedly threw stones and set fire to a Central Reserve Police Force vehicle.
The Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance demanded Wangchuk's release and accountability for the Sept. 24 violence. Wangchuk has gained recognition for education reform work and environmental conservation efforts in Ladakh.
