Sound Particles has added GrainDust, a software synthesizer built on technology from its SkyDust instrument. Aimed at musicians and sound designers seeking organic tones, it uses granular synthesis to turn samples into evolving textures, melodies, and immersive soundscapes. The instrument offers four layers with independent controls, ships with more than 1,200 samples, and allows user audio import. Spatial formats range from stereo to 7.1.4, plus binaural and Ambisonics. An arpeggiator and a polyphonic sequencer help craft simple lines or intricate patterns, and MPE support and onboard effects round out the toolkit.
GrainDust provides controls for grain rate, density, size, continuity, detune, and sample range targeting, along with envelopes such as Hann, rectangle, triangle, Tukey, and saw. Movement tools animate grains in time and space, while 3D views and a routing matrix assist sound design. Extra envelopes and LFOs enable deeper customization. The plug-in runs on Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.15 or later in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. It is available at an introductory price of £179.06 as of Oct. 29, 2025, reduced from £239, with VAT included.
