South African police officer Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accuses Minister Senzo Mchunu of ties to criminal gangs

General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confronted South African authorities with serious accusations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu during a televised briefing. The KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner alleged that Mchunu maintained connections with organized criminal networks. Mkhwanazi claimed his superior dismantled a specialized investigative unit after it discovered a drug trafficking operation linked to government institutions. Armed officers wearing masks surrounded the general as he delivered his statement to national media outlets. Public response favored Mkhwanazi through social media campaigns demanding his protection from potential retaliation.

Mkhwanazi previously challenged corruption when he suspended crime intelligence chief Richard Mdluli despite political pressure fifteen years earlier. That action resulted in his dismissal from senior leadership positions before returning to prominence in 2018. Current polling indicates citizen confidence in law enforcement has fallen to twenty-two percent amid widespread concerns about criminal infiltration. Minister Mchunu rejected the allegations as unfounded while promising to address them formally. Professor Firoz Cachalia will assume interim ministerial duties following Mchunu's departure from the position.
