SRO Donates Pawpaw Seedlings to Nsanje Primary Schools

SRO just gave pawpaw tree seedlings to five elementary schools across East Bank in Nsanje District. These schools include Masenjere, Natibule, Chinyanje, Nakuyu, and Kalulu Primary. James Langwani is the organization's executive director. He explained that they started this project because climate change killed many fruit trees in the area.

The plan goes beyond helping schools. Every student from a group of 330 kids will receive three pawpaw seedlings to plant at home. Langwani believes fruits help people stay healthy. His organization wants to lead tree-planting efforts across 35 village groups under Traditional Authority Mlolo.

Langwani asked both teachers and students to take care of these trees. He mentioned they picked pawpaw trees because they grow fast and produce fruit multiple times. The principal at Chinyanje School, John Mpotalinga, thanked the SRO for the donation. He promised his school would look after the seedlings until they grew large enough to provide nutritional benefits.

The school already runs a feeding program with help from the Works Food Programme. Mpotalinga said these fruit trees would give students something healthy to eat after their porridge. An eighth-grade student named Kafukiza Memerise spoke for all the students. She promised they would care for the pawpaw trees until fruit appeared.
