Starlink to power police cashless fines

Zimbabwe will deploy satellite internet at police checkpoints to enable digital fine payments nationwide. The government plans to install point-of-sale terminals at roadblocks through a partnership between the home affairs and information technology ministries. Starlink satellite service will provide connectivity in areas where mobile networks are weak or absent.

Officials said the system will reduce cash handling and improve transparency in law enforcement operations. Police can process spot fines electronically along highways and remote roads once the infrastructure becomes operational. The initiative supports the country's transition toward a cashless economy and strengthens confidence in the Zimbabwe Gold currency.

Home Affairs officials said eliminating physical cash transactions will limit opportunities for corruption at checkpoints. Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed deployment is underway but did not specify completion dates. The Reserve Bank is introducing terminals that can operate without continuous power or internet access to serve areas with unreliable infrastructure.
