Steinberg opens VST 3.8 to the world

Steinberg converted its Virtual Studio Technology 3 software development kit to MIT Open Source License terms. The company released VST 3.8 with the new framework that removes restrictions from third-party developers creating plugins for digital audio workstations. Technical Lead Yvan Gabit said the simplified access encourages wider adoption across platforms and applications.

The update adds MIDI 2.0 interface support and refreshes the VSTGUI framework for graphical plugin design. Steinberg previously shifted its ASIO audio technology to GPLv3 licensing earlier this month. The MIT License permits free modification and commercial distribution while requiring original copyright notices to remain intact. The changes eliminate complexity from the previous dual-licensing structure that developers requested be reformed.
