Stunning Contrasts - Serekunda Market Sanitation Debate

Vendors Praise Kanifing Market's Cleanliness.

The vendors at Serekunda Market are happy. They say the market is clean and orderly. This is thanks to the Kanifing Municipal Council. The council runs the market.

Fatoumatta Barrows sells goods at the market. She spoke to a reporter who visited recently. Ms. Barrows said there are few complaints about cleanliness. Waste is picked up every day, and vendors have enough trash bins.

But not everyone is pleased. Sulayman Fofana sells at the market. He said his section does not have waste bins. People leave garbage on the roads. Trucks do come to take the trash away often. But Mr. Fofana is upset about the gutters. Vendors dug them for rainwater. He says the government ignores the gutters.

The market toilets are in good shape, though. People pay about 2 cents to use them.

Modou Busso is in charge of the market. He said some traders do not have bins, but they can leave trash at special dump sites. The trash will still be collected.

Mr. Busso said the council does not neglect the gutters. He stated that the vendors dug the gutters, so they have to keep them clean and working.
