Suda51’s Romeo is a Dead Man bends time with melee chaos

Grasshopper Manufacture director Goichi Suda revealed his studio's latest project draws inspiration from the Back to the Future film during Gamescom 2025. Romeo is a Dead Man follows an FBI agent who hunts criminals across different time periods after dying and receiving life-saving technology from his grandfather. The developer explained that combat mechanics favor close-range fighting while still allowing players to succeed with any weapon type, and enemy design often requires switching between melee attacks and firearms. The linear action game launches in 2026 for personal computers, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S.

Suda defended his decision to create original intellectual property despite market trends favoring established franchises. The Japanese developer stated that industry preferences shift between sequels and new titles over time, but Grasshopper Manufacture continues pursuing both approaches equally. The studio built the game using Unreal Engine 5 technology to power its violent science fiction setting.
