Increased Rainfall Expected in Southern Kenya, Met Department Says.
The Kenya Meteorological Department said Kenya will see more rain in some areas this weekend. The southern half of the country will receive moderate to heavy rainfall.
"Changes are coming!" Kenya Met said on X. "Expect more rainfall in southern Kenya starting this weekend. The rain will gradually move northward during the week."
The forecast is for Saturday, January 25, to Wednesday, January 29. The northern half of Kenya and the coast will be sunny and dry.
The Highlands, Central and South Rift Valley, and Southeastern Lowlands may have scattered rainfall. This includes Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka counties. These areas will see rain in the afternoon and night.
"Parts of the Rift Valley, Southeastern Lowlands, and Central Highlands may have isolated storms later in the forecast period," the statement said.
Kenya Met also predicted strong southeasterly winds over 25 knots (12.5 m/s) in parts of Turkana, Marsabit, and Garissa counties.
On Friday, IGAD said most of the Greater Horn of Africa will likely have below-normal rainfall from March to May 2025. The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre released the seasonal forecast.
The rainy season is important for the equatorial part of the Greater Horn of Africa. It brings up to 60 percent of the year's rainfall.
The forecast shows that most of Somalia, eastern and northern Kenya, southern and northeastern Ethiopia, Djibouti, coastal Eritrea, western South Sudan, southern and western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and northwestern Tanzania will probably have below-average rainfall.
The Ethiopia-Kenya-Somalia border areas, northeastern Ethiopia, southern Eritrea, and parts of southwestern South Sudan are especially likely to have below-normal conditions.
Southwestern Ethiopia, western Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania have a 70 percent chance of getting over 200mm of rain this season.
The temperature forecast shows a high probability of warmer-than-normal conditions. Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, northern Somalia, and northern Kenya have the highest chances (over 75 percent) of this.
