Switch 2 Game-Key cards irk fans, thrill devs with no limits

Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key cards face consumer resistance despite developer enthusiasm. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi explained to JP Games that traditional cartridges impose significant constraints. Developers encounter storage limits of 64 gigabytes and slower loading speeds compared to solid-state drives. Game-Key cards address these challenges through a semi-download system that utilizes the console's internal storage.

Hamaguchi expressed hope that players will eventually embrace this format as gaming culture evolves. The technology enables studios to deliver high-end AAA experiences previously impossible on the platform. While CD Projekt Red successfully released Cyberpunk 2077 on standard cartridges, other developers like those behind Star Wars Outlaws required Game-Key cards to achieve their performance targets.
